Gioura

Gioura

In an area of 11 sq. km, Gioura coastline is steep and rocky. Due to its coasts, but also because of the rough and full of crags inland, many sightseers call it the “Devil’s Island”. In the island there is a rare species of a mountain goat, scientifically named Capra aegagrus f. hircus. Because of this rare species, during winter time there are guards on the island so they can check on the hunters that they want to hunt this rare mountain goat species.

There is also on the island the famous cave of the Cyclops, which is believed that the Cyclops Polyphemus, who was blinded by Odysseus, lived there. It is not allowed to visit the cave as an accident has happened there at the past.

One must not forget the Pnigmenos beach, a beach of rare natural beauty. It’s a white sand and white marble pebble beach. There you can also find a cave where you can rest on a sunny day, while there is water coming out of its springs.
