Skantzoura island is an area of 7,7 sq. km, while it also belongs, like Kyra Panagia, to the Moni of Agia Lavra (Monastery) of Agion Oros. There is no protected harbour for the small boats to dock there.
The island is rich in marble stockage. However, when the National Park was established, the exploitation of the mineral wealth was prohibited.
In front of Skantzoura island, there are some smaller islands (Kasidi, Lachanou, Stroggylo, Polemika, Praso, Skantili, Korakas), which they serve as a rest house for cormorants, great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo), and other species of sea gulls, in order to lay their eggs. For this reason, Skantzoura belongs to Zone A of the National Park, although it’s located at a relatively higher distance from the other islands of Zone A.
In front of Skantzoura there are Kasidi, Lachanou, Polemika, Stroggylo, Praso, Skantili and Korakas islands. Here, during breeding season, cormorants, great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) and various species of sea gulls come to lay their eggs.
